On being too much woman

I recently read the article Too Much Woman and it spoke to my soul. So much so, I wanted to share my experience with being called “too much.”

On being too much woman

  • Too happy
  • Too sad
  • Too honest
  • Love too hard
  • Demand solitude in a noisy world
  • Laugh too loud
  • Speak too loud
  • Too emotional
  • Too intimidating
  • Too feminist
  • Too much empathy
  • Too nice
  • Too mean
  • Too direct
  • High maintenance
  • Selfish
  • B-ch
  • Conceited
  • Too New York (yes, that too)
  • Too artsy
  • Too old
  • Too young
  • Too thin
  • Too fat
  • Too strict of a parent
  • Too hands-on as a mom

Why have I been called this and more? Because a woman who loves herself is intimidating. We live in a world where we are made to feel like our voices don’t matter. Self-love is conceit. Speaking up means you’re a bitch. Knowing what you want makes you demanding. There’s always someone smarter, prettier and more worthy than us. The list goes on and on.

At my age, I’m so over the rhetoric about how women should behave and the dialogues that pit us against eachother. Believe it or not, as strong as I consider myself to be, I’ve fallen prey to shutting it down in order to make others more comfortable. I’ve dressed differently, kept opinions to myself and never mentioned any of my accomplishments all for the sake someone else’s feelings.

And let me tell you, it’s a terrible feeling.

Yea, I’m loud. Yea, I will call BS when I see it. Yea, I have opinions and I share them. I’m good mix of all my experiences in life, and I’m proud of it.

I’m real.

All this to say, please don’t let anyone dim your light. As the saying goes – What other people think of you is none of your business. Carry on and do you. Be you. Laugh. Dance. Share. Live life to the fullest. We only have one shot. Don’t use it being basic.
