Love letter

I’m about to show my age right now, but every time I see the words Love Letter I think of (and sing) Giggles’ song. Not familiar with it? OK. Moving on.

Babble recently invited my fiancé and I to write and read a love letter to one another in honor of Valentine’s Day along with several other couples. I love the way the video turned out. The couple that’s been married for 60 years melts my heart.

I’m not a big Valentine’s Day person. I feel it puts so much pressure on couples to buy  (overpriced) things in the hopes of sparking romance. It just seems so contrived. That’s why I loved the idea of reading a love letter to one another.

Here’s are the love letter we wrote to another:

My dearest Rachel,

Yesterday,  I walked through the door and you called out my name to greet me.  I replied back halfheartedly in a low monotone voice as I closed the door behind me and put down my things. It was a long day, the kind of day that leaves you slouching in your chair staring out into space like a zombie. I proceeded to remove my jacket walking over to give you a kiss and ask about your day, again in the same voice. After a quick dialogue I rushed off to cook dinner. I stood in the kitchen quietly thinking about how I sounded and so I decided to write you this letter to thank you for being there when I walk through the door every night.

I may not verbalize it but that is the best part of my day. You are home to me. You are the reason I wake up in the morning and what gets me through the day. Watching you over the past three years battling to get your health back while simultaneously working the equivalent of two jobs and raising a teenager inspires me to be a better man.

The strength and resiliency you show daily is the foundation that our home is built on. From the bottom of my heart I thank you. I look forward to spending the rest of my life by your side. I love you, Rachel, you are my best friend, and my soulmate.

Dear Kevin,

Who would’ve thought that a friendship request on Facebook from an old boyfriend would have changed my life so much. Here we are together creating a new life with each other, and I could not be happier.

When I think about us and all that we’ve shared there are so many things I’m thankful.

I’m thankful for you. Your laugh, sense of humor and nurturing soul. You’re also a really great dresser and amazing cook. Our love our conversations, date nights and quiet evenings at home. Thank you for being you. But wait, there’s more.

Thank you for choosing me. You lived your life being very picky about who you give your heart to. I’m honored you chose me.

Thank you for supporting my crazy life and schedule. Having you by my side throughout this journey to talk to and collaborate with has made the work I do that much better. I’m so grateful that you get it and take on responsibilities in the home even though I work from home most of the time. You seriously get it, and I appreciate so much that you understand the true meaning of a partnership.

Thank you for accepting me for who I am. You know me. You know when I need my space. And you know when I need a tremendous of attention. You work around my art brain, which requires a lot of flexibility and patience on your part and I recognize that.

Thank you for taking care of me when I needed it the most. I spent two years grappling a chronic pain disorder that took on its own life. Even though you didn’t understand all of my symptoms, it didn’t matter. You made sure that my son and I were well taken care of and comfortable. Your homemade soups made everything better.

Thank you for treating my son like your own. I admire your from coming into this fully understanding the delicate role of step-parenting. You never once complained about the responsibilities or put your own needs. It takes a very strong and selfless person to do that.

My life has forever changed since reconnecting with you. I’m thankful for every day we get to spend together.
